5 Essential Makeup Hacks
Now that the winter season is behind us, we can breathe a sigh of relief. Cold weather can really do a lot of damage to our skin, and it seems like we’re spending all winter moisturizing and playing defense. We’re all looking forward to enjoying a little “fun in the sun” this spring, but it creates its own set of skin problems. Here are a few simple makeup hacks you can use right away to battle common spring and summer skin problems:
1. Start with a good primer
A good primer should be light and easy to apply. Our skin is porous, so your foundation will help you smooth out the surface of your skin before you apply other products. Primer is sometimes crudely compared to wall spackle, but it is actually a very good comparison. Crow’s feet and laugh lines are common problems that we have to deal with as we age, but a good foundation is a great way to fight back. Be sure to find a primer that matches your natural skin tone, and won’t run or clump up if you perspire. It should also be easy to remove, particularly if you struggle with blackheads and acne. You always want to allow your pores to breathe during the day, and keep your skin clean while you sleep on a clean pillowcase.
2. Fill any brow gaps
Everyone’s eyebrows are different, but no one’s born with a perfect pair. Unfortunately, many people can get overzealous with the tweezers. If you feel like you’ve done more harm than good, pencils and powders give you many options to smooth and fill any brow gaps. The brush and pencil technique is just as important as the product itself, and you can find many tutorials online for easy lessons.
3. Use a liquid foundation vs. powder
The choices of foundations are almost limitless, but powder foundations can be messy to apply and remove. They’re not the best option if you have dry skin. Liquid foundations are clean and easy to apply, and are ideal if you have normal or dry skin. They offer additional hydration to give you a more dewy and luminous look, and many also offer UV protection.
4. Use a skin highlighter to create a dewy look
Achieving that fresh, dewy look is not as difficult as you think if you choose the right skin highlighter. For best results, be sure to thoroughly cleanse and exfoliate beforehand, and apply your foundation and highlighter immediately. There are also several additional things that you can do to achieve healthy and luminous skin, such as a consistent sleep schedule, regular exercise, and a diet rich in Niacinamide, and vitamins C & D.
5. Condition your lips with a moisturizing lip gloss
Your choice of lipstick or lip gloss tells the world around you: some women like a more high class and understated look, and many love to express themselves with bright shiny colors. Whatever the case, a moisturizing lip gloss is a must! It will help you deal with dry, cracked lips, protect you from harmful UV rays, and give you beautiful (and kissable) lips. There are also several great moisturizing lip glosses available in a matte finish if you prefer a classier look.
